OUR HISTORY

The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Association of SA was formed in 1977 by a group of bereaved parents who had lost babies to SIDS and struggled to find support. At the time in Australia approximately 500 to 600 babies a year were dying suddenly and unexpectedly during sleep from what was called ‘Cot Death’. During this time similar support groups were founded in other states around Australia.

Bereavement support was the main purpose for the formation of our organisation but fundraising in SA (and around Australia) began shortly after to fund research into ‘Cot Death’ and how to prevent it. As a result of this research the hugely successful ‘Back to Sleep’ campaign was launched in 1991 followed by the safe sleep guidelines which have seen a dramatic drop in the number of babies dying suddenly and unexpectedly. Since 1991 over 10,000 babies’ lives have been saved.

Our organization has changed over the years as need has dictated. Our bereavement support initially supporting SIDS deaths and then as these numbers decreased through the hugely successful Back to Sleep Public Education Campaign and the introduction of the safe sleep guidelines our charter was able to be expanded to cater for more bereaved parents by supporting any sudden unexpected deaths from conception to 6 years of age. Our charity name was changed to SIDS and Kids to acknowledge all the other types of losses we provided support for.

In 2016 several SIDS and Kids offices around Australia merged to form Rednose. At that time SIDS and Kids SA, SIDS and Kids NT and SIDS and Kids Tasmania decided to remain branded as SIDS and Kids. SIDS and Kids NT has subsequently rebranded to Amber NT and is now focussed on grief support and training.

In 2020 our Board commenced a review process primarily driven by feedback received from our stakeholders. The main feedback being that having SIDS in the SIDS and Kids SA name resulted in some confusion amongst bereaved parents and the staff who support them, with many believing that our organisation only provided support and grief counselling for families that experience the death of a baby due to SIDS and this is not the case. This review also identified a gap in free grief support services available for parents who have experienced the sudden and unexpected death of a child from 7 to 17 years of age.

In 2021 as a result of this review our Board made the decision to separate our safe sleep and bereavement services and rebrand the bereavement arm of our charity to Red Tree Foundation. A decision was also made to increase the charter from conception to 6 years to conception to 17 years of age. SIDS and Kids SA will now purely focus on safe sleep education and training.
The Red Tree Foundation was launched in September 2022.
